1.                           I saw something on the Tele that really confused me.  A report in Washington, D.C. stated that diesel fumes are harmful to one’s health.  We knew this twenty, no thirty, no forty years ago.  Large diesel trucks must have their exhaust directed upward and vented, ten feet off the ground.
Passenger buses and small trucks can blow that exhaust right into your face with immunity.  Talk about a smoking menace, diesel exhaust is probably the worst.
Another unknown menace that is not made public is “formaldehyde”.  All knit fabric manufactured contains a resin containing formaldehyde.  It is put on the fabric to make it look nice.
Formaldehyde resin is easily removed but most garment manufacturers leave it in to make the garments look better, no wrinkles.  If you don’t believe this is a danger to us, go into a fabric store.  A laryngectomee will cough almost immediately upon entering.
All clothing you buy today may have this resin.  Clothing purchased should be washed prior to wearing, which eliminates this hazard to your health.
It only took forty years or so to discover the hazard to your health of diesel fumes so give them some time to find a substitute for formaldehyde.
The warning label reads as follows:

THIS PRODUCT IS TREATED WITH A FORMALDEHYDE-BASED
RESIN AND MAY RELEASE A LOW LEVEL OF FORMALDEHYDE.
OVER EXPOSURE TO FORMALDEHYDE MAY CAUSE EYE AND
RESPIRATORY TRACT IRRITATION AND MAY RESULT IN
SENSITIZATION.  TO MSDS FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

1.                           We have accepted the new United States Postal Service raise in prices without raising our prices at this time.  Imagine, if you will, going into the Post office and asking for a penny post card.            Medicare sets the prices for stoma care products and we have not had a raise for more than three years.  Oil prices have increased which reflects the price we pay for our supplies.  Foam and Tape are plastic which is a byproduct of oil.

I will be attending the Texas Laryngectomee meeting in San Antonio from April 5th through the 8th.  The vender’s viewing time is 8:A.M. on Friday the 6th till 5:30 P.M. and again on Saturday the 7th.

| Replacement Tape |

1.                           Have you ever wondered how the movie actresses keep their chest covered when it is open down to their navel?  We sell replacement tape, which is to be used when a laryngectomee wants to reuse a Foam Filter.  The Foam Filter can be machine washed and dried with your other clothes.  This destroys the adhesive tape and must be replaced for re-use of the Foam Filter.  That is where we got the name  ‘replacement tape.’  This tape can be used anytime you wish to hold a piece of cloth in place anywhere on the body.  It is surgical quality and has hypoallergenic adhesive.  Try a small piece on your stoma covers.  This tape will stop the stoma cover from migrating around the neck while playing any active sport.

| Esophageal Speech |

At the IAL convention in Vancouver, Canada several laryngectomee attendees came up to my booth stating how they liked the Video I did several years ago on Esophageal Speech.  About four who had their prosthesis in place started talking to me using their new esophageal voice.  They, like many others, use esophageal speech in friendly places and use their finger when in public.
One laryngectomee listening to our conversation decided to try esophageal speech.
At esophageal classes he was told how to put air into the esophagus to say words.  This was difficult for him.  I told him to take a deep breath and then let all of the air out and say the word “ninety”.  Several tries later he was successful.  In ten or fifteen minutes he was counting ninety, ninety two, ninety three.  Ninety one is hard to say because there is no sound to put air into the esophagus, such as the T’s in Ninety two.
The object of saying words with the Lungs empty is to signal the sphincter muscle to open and allow air into the esophagus for speech.  Also when forcing speech there will be no stoma blast.
For those wearing a prosthesis and willing to try an independent way of speaking, it works.  The results are amazing.  Start counting at 20 for five minutes every hour and before you know it you will become an independent public speaker.
